Careerpower reported on 29 October 2026 that the Tamil Nadu Government has approved 8,000 Field Assistant posts in the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL), by a Government Order dated 28 October 2026. The posts are to be filled by direct recruitment through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), in two phases: 5,000 posts planned for 2027 and 3,000 for 2028. No notification has been released and no application is open. I have not seen the Government Order itself, so everything below is as reported and needs checking against tnpsc.gov.in and tnpdcl.org. Qualification, age limit, selection stages and the application dates are not published in anything I found.
The short version
This is an approval, not a notification. A government order says how many posts may be filled and who will conduct the recruitment. A notification says who can apply, how, and by when. The first has been reported, and the second has not appeared.
Any website, video or message that says you can apply for TNEB Field Assistant jobs today, pay a fee or fill in a form, is not describing a real application. I come back to this below, because the reports of an approval tend to attract scams within days.
What has been announced
Careerpower reports Government Order (G.O.) Ms. No. 126, issued by the Energy Department of the Tamil Nadu Government on 28 October 2026. It permits TNPDCL to fill 8,000 Field Assistant posts through direct recruitment conducted by TNPSC. The order is reported to say that the selection stages will be given in the notification.
The 8,000 posts are phased over two calendar years: 5,000 in 2027 and 3,000 in 2028, according to the same report. Careerpower says the detailed notification and the registration schedule will be released soon, on TNPSC’s website. ‘Soon’ is not a date, and the phasing suggests the first recruitment would be run in 2027, so candidates should not expect an application window next week.
The numbers do not match earlier reports
Several pages earlier this year described a much larger Tamil Nadu electricity recruitment. Sakshi Education, Testbook and Onlineresult reported that 20,449 vacancies would be filled across TNPDCL, TANTRANSCO, TNGECL and TNPGCL. In those reports, 12,500 were for Multi-Purpose Field Assistant (including Assessor), and the new-recruitment subtotal for 2026-27 was 15,058, with posts for Assistant Engineers, Technical Assistants and Junior Assistants (Accounts) on top. Those pages expected a notification in July or September 2026, and none appeared.
| Report | Figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Careerpower, 29 October 2026 | 8,000 Field Assistants | G.O. Ms. No. 126; 5,000 in 2027, 3,000 in 2028; TNPDCL |
| Sakshi, Testbook, Onlineresult (earlier in 2026) | 12,500 Multi-Purpose Field Assistants (including Assessor) | Part of 20,449 across four utilities; notification was expected in July or September |
I cannot reconcile 8,000 with 12,500. They may be different posts, since a ‘Multi-Purpose Field Assistant (Including Assessor)’ is not obviously the same as a ‘Field Assistant’. They may refer to different phases, or one may be out of date. The 20,449 figure may also have been an announcement of intent, with the Government Order approving only part of it. If you read a page that quotes 12,500 or 20,449 as the current number, check the date on the page and look for the Government Order.
Pay: what the reports say, and what the arithmetic shows
Careerpower gives the basic pay scale as ₹18,800 to ₹59,900 per month, and it lists these components, which it attributes to the Government’s estimate for each employee.
| Component | Amount per month |
|---|---|
| Dearness Allowance | ₹11,280 |
| House Rent Allowance | ₹1,800 |
| City Compensatory Allowance | ₹360 |
| Medical Allowance | ₹300 |
| Employer’s contribution to the pension scheme | ₹3,008 |
| Estimated monthly employment cost | ₹35,548 |
Check the sums. At the starting basic of ₹18,800, dearness allowance of ₹11,280 is 60 per cent. Add the basic, dearness allowance, house rent allowance, city compensatory allowance and medical allowance and you get ₹32,540. Add the employer’s pension contribution of ₹3,008 and you get ₹35,548, which matches the reported total.
That tells you what the ₹35,548 is. It is the Government’s cost of employing one person at the entry point of the scale, which includes the employer’s share of the contributory pension. It is not the salary a new Field Assistant receives. Before any deductions, the entry-level gross is about ₹32,540 by this arithmetic. The employee’s own pension contribution and other deductions come off that, and the reports do not give them, so the take-home figure is lower and unknown. Dearness allowance also changes with the government’s rates, so the 60 per cent is a snapshot.
The headline pay scale applies only to the start. Pay rises with increments within the scale, and I do not have the increment rules. A page that quotes a specific ‘in-hand salary’ for this post is guessing.
Who will run the recruitment
The Government Order names TNPSC, which is a change for this kind of post. Earlier Field Assistant (Trainee) recruitment in the power utility was run by the utility itself, and TNPDCL’s own recruitment page still lists a direct recruitment of Field Assistant (Trainee) with a notice about a proposed date for a physical test, last updated on 21 October 2026. That page belongs to an earlier recruitment. It shows that the utility has recently handled this post on its own, with a physical test, and it is a separate matter from the new 8,000.
If TNPSC is indeed the conducting body, candidates should expect its usual way of working. TNPSC recruitments generally use its one-time registration system, followed by an application for each notification. Check tnpsc.gov.in for the current process, and complete or update your registration before a notification appears, so that your details, photograph and certificates are ready. I am describing TNPSC’s general practice, and not something in the Government Order.
Where to watch: tnpsc.gov.in for the notification, and tnpdcl.org for TNPDCL’s own announcements. The Government Order may also be on the Tamil Nadu Government’s website. Do not rely on a coaching page’s summary for the eligibility details when the notification arrives.
What is not known: the conditions
The reports give no qualification, no age limit, no category-wise vacancy split and no selection process for this recruitment. A generic page on an unrelated site lists ITI or diploma qualifications for Field Assistant posts, but it is 132 days old and about TNPDCL recruitment in general, so I would not rely on it.
There are two points to think about, both as possibilities, not reports.
The first is a physical test. TNPDCL’s own page for the earlier recruitment lists a physical test, and field work on distribution lines is physical. A recruitment that moves to TNPSC might still include one, or might not. If you plan to apply, general fitness is a sensible investment either way.
The second is a language test. Many recent TNPSC recruitments include a qualifying paper in Tamil. Whether that applies here depends on the notification. A candidate who has studied outside the Tamil Nadu system may want to check this early.
From a Government Order to a notification
A Government Order is the permission. After it, the department sends its requirement to the recruiting body, which prepares a notification with the vacancy split by category, the eligibility rules and the schedule. How long this takes varies, from weeks to many months, and I found no report that says how long it will take here. In recent years TNPSC has published an annual planner of tentative notification months for its exams. If that planner covers this post, it will be a better guide to timing than any coaching page, and it is worth checking on tnpsc.gov.in.
Until then, the honest answer to ‘when will the notification come’ is that nobody outside the Commission and the department knows, and the reported phasing points to 2027.
What the earlier recruitment page tells you
TNPDCL’s own recruitment page for the earlier Field Assistant (Trainee) direct recruitment lists four items: a notification regarding a proposed date for the physical test, the opening and closing dates for applications, the notification itself, and a corrigendum. Two lessons follow. The utility has recently run this recruitment with a physical test, so it would be unwise to assume the new one is purely written. And notifications of this kind can be corrected after they appear, which is why candidates should read the latest version, with any corrigendum, and not a copy saved on the first day.
Reading the allowances
The allowance figures in the table behave differently, and that matters when you compare offers. Dearness allowance is a percentage of basic pay, here 60 per cent at the starting figure, and it changes with government announcements. House rent allowance, city compensatory allowance and medical allowance are quoted as fixed rupee amounts, and in practice they may vary with the place of posting. The employer’s pension contribution is not paid to you, but it is part of what the post costs.
So when two pages quote different ‘salaries’ for the same post, they may be adding different components or using different dates. Compare them by listing the components. A figure that gives no breakdown cannot be checked, and one that includes the employer’s contribution as if it were pay overstates what reaches you.
A twelve-month watch list
This is my suggestion.
For the next two months, check tnpsc.gov.in and tnpdcl.org once a week for a notification or planner entry, and set up or update your TNPSC registration. Keep your certificates scanned and named clearly. Begin a fitness routine that you can keep up.
Through the first half of 2027, if a notification appears, read it in full the same day: eligibility, dates, fee, the exam scheme, and any corrigendum later. Apply early rather than on the last day, and keep a copy of the confirmation.
After that, prepare for the stages the notification names. If no physical test appears, the fitness you have built is still useful for the job.
Why 2027 matters
The phasing has a practical consequence. If 5,000 posts are planned for 2027 and the next 3,000 for 2028, a candidate has time to prepare, but also reason to wonder about age limits and certificates. An age limit is normally counted on a date fixed in the notification. A candidate who is near the upper limit today could be over it by the time the notification arrives, and I have no basis to say what the limit is or whether it will be relaxed for any category.
The plan should not be to wait. It should be to prepare the things that will be needed whatever the details turn out to be: identity and educational certificates in order, a community certificate in the right format, a registration on the Commission’s system, and a decent level of fitness.
Beware of fake applications
An approval of thousands of posts in a state where electricity board jobs are valued is exactly what draws fraudsters. Common forms are websites that offer a ‘TNEB Field Assistant Application 2026’ and take a fee, agents who claim to have seats or know people in the department, and messaging groups that post a link to ‘register now’. None of these can be genuine, since no application has opened.
Three rules apply. Do not pay anyone for a seat, a form or a list. Do not give your Aadhaar number, bank details or certificates to anyone who contacts you. And go to tnpsc.gov.in and tnpdcl.org yourself, by typing the address, when you want to check for a notification.
A quick test helps with any claim you meet. Ask three questions. Does the page link to a notification PDF on tnpsc.gov.in or tnpdcl.org, with a number and a date? Does it give a last date, a fee and an exam scheme that you can find in that PDF? And does it ask you to pay or share documents before you have seen the notification? If the first two answers are no and the third is yes, close the page. A real notification can be checked on the official site by anyone, without logging in or paying.
Pages that list an application with a last date of 30 October 2026 for ‘TNPDCL Recruitment’ refer to other posts, and in one case to a district-level vacancy of two posts. They are not the 8,000.
How to prepare, without a syllabus
This is my suggestion, since no syllabus exists yet.
Start with certificates. Collect your school and any technical certificates, your community certificate, and your identity documents, and check that your name and date of birth are the same on all of them.
Build fitness steadily: running or brisk walking most days, some strength work for the legs, arms and back, and good sleep. Field work for a power utility can involve long hours outdoors and climbing, and a candidate who is fit is better placed at a physical test, if there is one, and in the job.
For the written side, assume a general level of arithmetic, general knowledge, general science and Tamil and English language skills, as in many state-level recruitments for field posts. If you hold an ITI or diploma in an electrical trade, keep your basics fresh, since technical questions may appear. These are guesses until the notification gives the scheme, so keep the effort proportionate and do not buy a long course on the strength of a rumour.
What to watch for
Look for the TNPSC notification, which should give the qualification, age limit, category-wise vacancies, fee if any, the stages of selection, the syllabus and the dates. Check whether it covers the 5,000 posts planned for 2027, and whether the 3,000 for 2028 will be a separate notification. Check, too, whether the notification calls the post Field Assistant or Multi-Purpose Field Assistant, since the title will tell you which of the earlier numbers it relates to.
What is not yet known
- The notification date and the application window.
- Qualification, age limit and category-wise vacancies.
- The selection stages, including any physical test or Tamil paper.
- Whether the 8,000 posts are the same as the 12,500 reported earlier.
- Take-home pay, increments and deductions.

FAQs
Can I apply for TNEB Field Assistant now? No. A Government Order has approved the posts, but no notification or application has been issued. Any site offering a form today is not reporting a real application.
How many posts are there? Careerpower reports 8,000 Field Assistant posts, 5,000 in 2027 and 3,000 in 2028. Earlier reports spoke of 12,500 Multi-Purpose Field Assistant posts within 20,449 across four utilities, and I could not reconcile the two.
Who will conduct the recruitment? The Government Order, as reported, names the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. Watch tnpsc.gov.in.
Is ₹35,548 the salary? No. It is the reported estimated monthly cost to the Government at the start of the scale, including the employer’s pension contribution. Before deductions, the entry-level gross by the reported components is about ₹32,540.
What qualification is needed? It has not been published. Wait for the notification, and ignore generic pages that list ITI or diploma requirements without citing it.
