PGCIL Engineer Trainee Recruitment 2026: 319 Posts, Apply Online, GATE 2026, Eligibility & Last Date OPEN

from several education-portal reports of the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) vacancy notice dated 3 November 2026: 319 Engineer Trainee posts in Electrical, Civil and Computer Science, filled through GATE 2026 scores. Online applications opened at 5:00 PM on 3 November and close at 11:59 PM on 18 November 2026. Still pending: Group Discussion and interview dates, the shortlist and the result. We could not open the official notice, so every detail below is as reported by portals that cite it.

What PGCIL has announced

POWERGRID, a Maharatna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has opened applications for Engineer Trainee posts. Recruitment is through GATE scores, not a separate written test. The vacancy notice is dated 3 November 2026 and sits under the umbrella advertisement CC/04/2025, dated 27 September 2025.

That explains why you may see two dates in circulation. The September 2025 advertisement announced that PGCIL would recruit Engineer Trainees through GATE. The November 2026 notice is the one that carries the vacancy numbers and opens the application link. One portal lists the closing date of an earlier stage as 31 March 2026, which looks like that earlier phase or an error, since the other reports show applications opening on 3 November 2026.

Only GATE 2026 scores are accepted. Candidates with GATE 2025 or earlier scores cannot apply, and a GATE 2027 score is not valid for this notice either.

A naming confusion to know about

One portal’s article describes the posts as “Engineer Trainee-2027” filled “through GATE-2027” in Electrical, Civil, Computer Science and Electronics. The same article’s tables, and every other report, say GATE 2026 and list only three disciplines. The most likely explanation is a copying error, but we can’t confirm that.

Two practical points follow. Use the GATE 2026 scorecard and registration details when you apply. And if you are an Electronics candidate, don’t assume you are covered: the vacancy table in all reports shows no Electronics posts, even though the September 2025 listing on another portal showed an Electronics (EC) paper with vacancies to be announced. Read the notice’s vacancy table for your discipline before you pay a fee.

Vacancy 2026 details

Discipline GATE 2026 paper Vacancies Share
Engineer Trainee (Electrical) EE 250 78.4%
Engineer Trainee (Civil) CE 48 15.0%
Engineer Trainee (Computer Science) CS 21 6.6%
Total 319 100%

The shares are our arithmetic. Electrical alone accounts for almost four of every five posts. The reports we found don’t give a category-wise split (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwBD), so we can’t say how many posts are reserved in each discipline. That split is in the notice.

The small intake in Computer Science matters if you are choosing between recruitments. With 21 posts, a few candidates with very high CS scores would take a large share of the seats, so the margin for a candidate with a moderate score is thin. This is our reading of the numbers, not something the notice says.

The window is about two weeks. The link opens at 5:00 PM on the first day and closes just before midnight on the last, so you have 16 calendar days. Apply in the first week. A form that fails at the payment or upload stage on the last evening has nowhere to go.

Education qualification

The qualification has three parts: the degree, the minimum marks and the GATE paper.

Post Degree (full-time) Minimum marks GATE 2026 paper
Engineer Trainee (Electrical) B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg.) in Electrical / Electrical (Power) / Electrical and Electronics / Power Systems / Power Engineering (Electrical) 60% EE
Engineer Trainee (Civil) B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg.) in Civil Engineering 60% CE
Engineer Trainee (Computer Science) B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg.) in Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Information Technology 60% CS

Three details decide a lot of cases.

Full-time. The reports specify full-time degrees. Part-time and distance degrees are not described as eligible.

The 60%. The summaries don’t say whether this is the aggregate of all semesters or years, or whether a lower percentage applies to reserved categories. If your university reports CGPA, find its official conversion formula and keep the certificate ready. Check the notice’s wording on how the percentage is calculated.

Matching paper. Your GATE paper must match the discipline you apply for. A Civil graduate with an EE score cannot apply for Electrical, and the reverse also holds. If you qualified in more than one discipline, read the notice for whether you can apply for more than one post.

Also check whether the notice requires the degree to be completed by a particular date. The reports describe the post as for “fresh engineering graduates”, and we don’t know whether that rules out candidates with work experience.

Age limit and date-of-birth window

The maximum age is 28 years, counted as on 31 December 2025, per CareerPower. The cut-off date is a year old because it was set by the September 2025 advertisement.

Taking those figures at face value, a general-category candidate must have been born on or after 1 January 1997. Someone born on 31 December 1996 turns 29 on the cut-off date. That is our arithmetic, assuming the age counts completed years. Age relaxation for reserved categories exists in most central recruitments, but the amounts for this notice were not in the sources we found, so we don’t state them.

Because the date is fixed at the end of 2025, a candidate who is now 29 or older by today’s date can still be eligible if they were 28 or younger on 31 December 2025. Don’t compute your age from today.

Application fee

Per CareerPower, the fee is Rs. 500 for General, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates. SC, ST, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and Departmental candidates pay nothing. Payment is online only, and the application is treated as complete only after the fee is paid. The fee detail appears in one source, so confirm it in the notice or on the application portal.

Candidates claiming OBC (NCL) or EWS status should check which certificate format and date the notice requires before applying.

Selection process

The process, as reported, has four stages:

  1. Shortlisting on GATE 2026 marks
  2. Group Discussion
  3. Personal interview
  4. Medical examination

The weightage is GATE 2026 marks 85%, Group Discussion 3% and interview 12%. There is no separate written test. An earlier pre-notification article said selection would be by GATE and a personal interview only. The final notice adds the Group Discussion.

The weightage deserves a closer look. The Group Discussion and interview together carry 15 percent. Assume, for illustration, that the GATE component is scaled out of 85 from marks out of 100 (the notice’s actual scaling is not in our sources). Under that assumption, a perfect GD and interview is worth 15 points, and it takes about 17.6 raw GATE marks to cover that gap (15 divided by 0.85). In practice, the interview reorders candidates who are close on GATE marks and rarely rescues a large deficit.

What the reports don’t give: the number of candidates shortlisted per post, any minimum qualifying marks in the GD and interview, the GD and interview venues, and the medical standards. Those are in the notice.

Salary

The reported pay scale is Rs. 40,000-3%-1,40,000 (IDA), meaning a basic pay starting at Rs. 40,000 with 3 percent annual increments up to Rs. 1,40,000. The IDA suffix refers to the industrial dearness allowance pay pattern used in public sector enterprises, with allowances and benefits on top. A pre-notification article quoted a CTC range of Rs. 10 to 22 lakh a year “as per previous recruitment patterns”, but we could not verify it against this notice and don’t repeat it. Training period, service agreement and bond terms were not in the summaries.

How to apply online

  1. Keep your GATE 2026 application number, registration number and scorecard ready.
  2. Open www.powergrid.in and go to the careers section for the Engineer Trainee notice.
  3. Read the detailed advertisement before you fill the form.
  4. Register with your GATE 2026 details, and enter personal, educational and category information.
  5. Upload the required documents in the formats the form asks for.
  6. Pay the fee online if it applies to you.
  7. Submit before 11:59 PM on 18 November, then save and print the confirmation.

Reach the form through PGCIL’s own site, not through a link forwarded on a messaging app.

Documents and details to have ready

The reports don’t list the exact upload requirements, so treat this as a checklist and confirm it against the notice:

  • GATE 2026 scorecard and registration details
  • Degree certificate and mark sheets showing the 60% condition
  • Date-of-birth proof
  • Category certificate, if you claim reservation or fee exemption
  • Disability or Ex-Servicemen certificates, where relevant
  • Passport photograph and signature in the required format

Mistakes that cost applications

The ones you can’t undo: applying with the wrong GATE paper, applying with a part-time degree, and missing the 60% condition. These lead to rejection at any stage, and the reports say as much.

The ones that appear late: a category certificate in the wrong format or older than the notice allows, a date-of-birth mismatch between certificate and application, and an upload outside the specified size or format.

The quiet ones: using the wrong GATE year, assuming Electronics is covered, and waiting for the last evening. Do the form early and save a copy of every confirmation.

What happens next

After 18 November, PGCIL will presumably shortlist on GATE marks and call candidates for the Group Discussion and interview. The dates, venues and shortlist size haven’t been announced. Watch the careers page on powergrid.in and the email address and mobile number you registered with.
