MACS ARI Scientist C Recruitment 2026, Apply for 2 Scientist C Posts OPEN

The MACS-Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune, has opened applications for two permanent Scientist-C posts under Advertisement No. ADVT/Rect.P/Scientist-C/01/2026: one in Genetics & Plant Breeding and one in Developmental Biology. Online applications opened on 21 October 2026. The notice prints no calendar closing date, because the deadline is counted from the day the advertisement appears in Employment News, and that date has not been confirmed. Interview dates are not announced.

Two ARI recruitments are being confused

ARI ran a different Scientist recruitment earlier this year. Advertisement No. Rect.P/Scientists-02/2025-26 (11 February 2026) covered four posts: Scientist-E (Business Development), Scientist-C (Bioenergy) and two Scientist-B posts (Paleobiology and Bioinformatics). It closed on 15 March 2026. Pages that still say “Scientist E, C, B” and “last date 15 March” belong to that closed round.

The current recruitment is only for Scientist-C, with two vacancies, both unreserved. If a page lists Scientist-B or Scientist-E posts, it is stale.

I read the details through a portal’s reproduction of the notice that describes itself as officially verified, and I could not open the Institute’s PDF. Confirm eligibility details against the advertisement itself.

Important dates

Event Date
Advertisement October 2026
Online application start 21 October 2026 (as reported)
Printout and documents to reach ARI by post Within 30 days of the Employment News publication date
For the north-eastern states, Ladakh, Lahaul and Spiti, Pangi, Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep Within 45 days of the same date
Interview Not announced

Portals give different closing dates. One computes 20 November by adding 30 days to 21 October, and another’s job listing runs to 30 November. Neither is in the notice, because the notice counts from the publication date in Employment News. Do not plan around either date. Apply online early and post the printout as soon as you can.

The posts

Post Group Vacancy Category Pay level Age limit
Scientist-C Genetics & Plant Breeding 1 UR 11 40
Scientist-C Developmental Biology 1 UR 11 40

Both are permanent, based at ARI Pune, with one year of probation that may be extended. ARI is an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, with research in six areas: Biodiversity and Palaeobiology, Bioenergy, Bioprospecting, Developmental Biology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, and Nanobioscience.

Education qualification and experience

The essential qualification for Genetics & Plant Breeding is a First Class M.Sc in Agriculture with specialisation in Genetics and Plant Breeding or an allied discipline. For Developmental Biology it is a First Class M.Sc in Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or related fields. Both posts also need four years of research and development experience, shown by publications in journals of repute, gained after the academic degree.

A doctorate is only “desirable”. For Genetics & Plant Breeding the desirable list adds a doctoral degree in plant breeding or crop improvement, crop breeding and genomics-assisted research, field experimentation and phenotyping, and a record of high-impact publications and project work. For Developmental Biology it adds a Ph.D. in molecular, cell or developmental biology and at least three to five years of post-doctoral experience with cell culture and model organism research.

The experience rule has an arithmetic catch. Time spent acquiring the essential qualification does not count. But up to two years spent on a doctorate count as experience, and up to two years of post-doctoral research count too, when shown by a certificate and publications in journals of repute. So the most a PhD and post-doc can add together is four years. A candidate with a PhD and one year of post-doc has at most three counted years and falls short of the four-year essential requirement, unless they also have qualifying experience elsewhere. That is my reading of the rule, so check it against the notice before you apply.

Age limit and relaxation

The upper age limit is 40 years, counted on the closing date for applications. Relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and other categories follows Central Government orders. Government servants and employees of autonomous research organisations, research institutes and universities get up to five years. Both posts are unreserved, so reservation does not change the number of seats, but category relaxation and fee concessions still apply on the terms in the notice.

Application fee

The fee is Rs. 500 and is not refundable. SC, ST and women candidates are exempt. Payment is online through SBI Collect (Educational Institutions, then Agharkar Research Institute, then Others). Write the online receipt number in the application form and attach the receipt. The Institute takes no responsibility for pending or failed transactions, so if a payment fails, take it up with your bank and keep proof.

How to apply

This is a two-step process.

  1. Complete the online application at arijob.ourlib.in using a valid email address.
  2. Pay the fee unless you are exempt.
  3. Print the submitted application and attach self-attested copies of the documents listed below.
  4. Write “Application for <Post Code>“ on the envelope, for example “Application for Genetics & Plant Breeding/Scientist-C/2026”.
  5. Send it to the Director, Agharkar Research Institute, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar Road, Pune – 411 004, within the 30-day window.

The notice warns that the portal may be overloaded near the closing date, so apply well before it. An online application with no printout in the post is incomplete, and incomplete or partly filled applications are not considered.

Documents

The notice names the following:

  • the printout of the online application and a passport-size photograph
  • self-attested copies of educational, date-of-birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS, PwBD) and experience certificates
  • the fee receipt, for those who pay
  • experience certificates showing the date of joining, the date of relieving and the post held
  • a list of publications and patents; for SCI journal papers, a list with copies of the four best papers from the last five years, in chronological order, giving authors, title, journal, volume, pages, year, citation count and the journal’s impact factor
  • a No Objection Certificate in the Annexure-I format for candidates in government departments, public sector undertakings or autonomous organisations, signed by the head with the office seal; if you do not upload it with the form, you must bring it to the interview

Illegible or incorrect certificates can get the candidature rejected, and originals must be produced when asked. The four-paper list needs care, since the citation counts and impact factors are easy to leave out.

Selection process

There is no written exam. Meeting the essential qualifications does not by itself earn an interview. A committee decides whether your qualifications are equivalent to the essential and desirable ones, and if many applications arrive, the Institute may shortlist using the desirable qualifications and experience beyond the minimum. Only shortlisted candidates are told the date, time and venue, by email.

Outstation candidates called for interview are paid two-tier AC rail fare both ways by the shortest route. A reserve panel is prepared in order of merit from the interviewed candidates. It stays valid for one year and can be used for the advertised vacancy and later ones.

What the job descriptions suggest about shortlisting

The duties in the notice show what the committee is likely to want. For Genetics & Plant Breeding they include breeding programmes in wheat, soybean and grape, genomics-assisted breeding (GWAS, QTL mapping, SNP analyses, genomic selection), multi-parent and RIL populations, biofortification, multi-location field trials, phenotyping and seed production. Both posts expect publications, project proposals and extramural funding.

For Developmental Biology, the notice stresses starting independent projects in cell and developmental biology, organelle biology and disease, securing funding, supervising research scholars and academic outreach. This is a guide to what to emphasise in your list of publications and your cover details, since the interview decides, and it is my reading, not a rule.

Pay and service conditions

The pay is Level 11, Rs. 67,700 to Rs. 2,08,700, plus allowances as admissible. The notice lists NPS, medical reimbursement and LTC among the benefits, and says selected candidates are governed by the NPS Rules. Probation is one year and can be extended. You are liable to serve anywhere in India and abroad.

Syllabus, exam pattern and cut-off

There is no syllabus, exam pattern or cut-off, because the selection is by shortlisting and interview. Preparation means a tidy application, a clear account of your research and readiness to discuss your four best papers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying online and forgetting to post the printout within the window.
  • Counting only on a portal’s closing date of 20 or 30 November.
  • Reading a closed notice from February as the current one.
  • Leaving out citation counts and impact factors in the publication list.
  • Ignoring the experience-counting rule for PhD and post-doc years.
  • Forgetting the NOC if you are in government service.
