DU Recruitment 2026 (Advt. No. R&P/323/2026): 126 Senior Assistant and Assistant Posts, Eligibility, Fee, Selection Process and Cut-Off Rules APPLY FROM 23 Oct 2026

The University of Delhi’s advertisement R&P/323/2026, dated 19 October 2026, is confirmed for 46 Senior Assistant and 80 Assistant posts. The last date is 9 November 2026 or two weeks after the notice appears in Employment News, whichever is later. Exam dates, admit cards, results and cut-offs have not been announced.

Which DU notice this is

“DU Recruitment 2026” is a loose phrase, and several different notices sit under it. This article covers the University’s central advertisement for Senior Assistant (Post Code ND0601) and Assistant (Post Code ND0401), both permanent administrative posts. Individual colleges such as Maitreyi, Lakshmibai and Dyal Singh have run their own non-teaching notices this year, as portals report, with separate vacancies, portals and dates. Do not apply for one on the strength of another’s details.

Portals also disagree on the vacancy count. One coaching site lists 98 posts (24 Senior Assistant and 74 Assistant). The vacancy table in the advertisement itself shows 46 and 80, which makes 126. I read the advertisement through a copy of the PDF hosted by a job portal, since I did not open du.ac.in directly, and the numbers match the official table’s structure and arithmetic.

Important dates

Event Date
Advertisement 19 October 2026
Online applications open 23 October 2026 (reported by portals; the PDF gives no start date)
Last date to apply 9 November 2026, or two weeks after the Employment News publication, whichever is later
Preliminary test, mains, skill test Not announced

From today, applications open in two days and the first closing date is 19 days away. The “whichever is later” wording means the deadline can move, and DU says any addendum or corrigendum will be posted on its website only. Age and experience are counted as on the closing date, so a candidate who is a few weeks short of an experience year or over the age line by days should watch for the final date before deciding.

Vacancy

Post UR SC ST OBC EWS Total PwBD (inside total)
Senior Assistant (Level 6) 21 6 3 12 4 46 1 LD, 1 HI
Assistant (Level 4) 35 11 6 21 7 80 1 LD, 2 HI, 1 OBD

Together the two posts give UR 56, SC 17, ST 9, OBC 33 and EWS 11. Unreserved seats are 44 per cent of the total, and OBC has the second-largest share. Candidates of any category may apply for PwBD seats. If a PwBD seat goes unfilled, the notice says one UR seat is kept vacant.

The numbers, categories and recruitment mode can change, and the University reserves the right not to fill some or all posts. A news report on DU’s December 2024 notice listed the same 46 Senior Assistant and 80 Assistant posts. The fee exemption for applicants of the 2024 advertisement (R&P/311/2024) points to this being a fresh round for the same kind of vacancies, but the advertisement does not say what happened to the 2024 process.

Education qualification and experience

Both posts require a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or institution. This is not a fresher recruitment, and the experience condition is where most applications will be won or lost.

For Senior Assistant, you need three years of experience as Assistant or equivalent in Level 4. For Assistant, you need two years as Junior Assistant or an equivalent post. In both cases the experience must come from a central or state government body, a university, a research establishment, a PSU or an autonomous body. The advertisement also accepts an equivalent pay package in reputed private companies or corporate banks with an annual turnover of at least Rs. 200 crore. Assistant applicants also need English typing at 35 words per minute or Hindi typing at 30. Both posts expect proficiency in computer operations, and Senior Assistant adds noting and drafting.

Qualification and experience are counted as on the closing date. A private-sector candidate should make sure the employer’s certificate states the designation, the dates of service, the pay and the company’s turnover. A letter that only says “worked as executive” gives the scrutiny team nothing to equate with Level 4 or with a Junior Assistant. The notice accepts applications provisionally and checks documents later, so a weak certificate is not caught until it can cost you your place.

Age limit

The upper age limit is 35 years for Senior Assistant and 32 for Assistant, determined as on the closing date. Relaxation follows central government orders for SC, ST, OBC (central list), persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen and other specified categories. The advertisement also lets you add up to five years, or the actual number of years if fewer, if you have at least three years of regular service in the same or an allied field in government, statutory or autonomous bodies, universities and their colleges, or PSUs. Contract or daily-wage service does not count as regular service.

Departmental candidates of the University and its colleges are not held to the upper limit. Persons working on contract, daily wages or ad hoc basis directly under the University or its colleges, with at least one year of service, get a one-time exemption. Project-based and outsourced staff are excluded.

One condition catches people. A reserved-category candidate who becomes eligible only through age relaxation is considered for reserved seats of their own category, even with the merit for unreserved ones. A candidate who applies as General gives up both age relaxation and relaxed cut-off marks.

Application fee

Category Fee
General/Unreserved Rs. 1,000
OBC (NCL), EWS, Female Rs. 800
SC, ST, PwBD Rs. 600

Fees are not refunded under any circumstances, and applications with incomplete information or without the fee are rejected. Applicants of R&P/311/2024, dated 12 December 2024, are exempt from the fee.

The notice does not say how DU will recognise a 2024 applicant in the 2026 form. If you applied then, find your 2024 application number and the email you used. If the portal does not recognise you, write to non_teaching_rec@admin.du.ac.in, the technical contact printed in the advertisement, before you pay a fee you may not owe. A paid fee cannot be reclaimed.

How to apply and documents

Go to www.du.ac.in, open “Work with DU” under “Advertisement – Departments”, find R&P/323/2026 and use the online application link, which portals report as live from 23 October. Register with an email address you check daily, because DU sends every communication, including any skill test or interview letter, only to the email in your form. Enter your qualification and experience, upload the certificates for your category and experience, pay online and print a copy.

Documents to prepare now:

  • degree certificate and mark sheets
  • experience certificate(s) in the form described above
  • date-of-birth proof
  • proof of typing speed, if you hold one (for Assistant)
  • caste certificate on the prescribed format for SC, ST and OBC (NCL)
  • an OBC non-creamy layer certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026, digitally verifiable, in the central government format, with a sub-caste matching the Central List
  • an EWS income and asset certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026 and on or before the last date
  • a disability certificate showing at least 40 per cent, for PwBD candidates
  • a no-objection certificate from your employer if you work in a government department or PSU, due at document verification or whenever asked

The advertisement is blunt about the penalty. An OBC claim with a sub-caste not in the Central List, or an invalid EWS certificate, means you are treated as General. A missing NOC means cancellation. DU also reserves the right to offer a post at a lower level than the one you applied for, or on contract or deputation.

Selection process

Selection runs in two stages. Stage 1 is a preliminary MCQ test that only shortlists. Stage 2 is a descriptive main examination followed by a skill test. The preliminary marks carry no weight in the final assessment, and merit is drawn only from the main examination. The skill test is qualifying, with 50 of 100 marks required, but merit is drawn only for shortlisted candidates who appear in both the main and the skill test. Skip the skill test and you drop out.

The shortlisting rule is generous in count. The University shortlists 30 applications for one post and 15 more for each additional post. For 46 Senior Assistant posts that works out to 705 candidates, and for 80 Assistant posts it is 1,215. Candidates scoring exactly the cut-off marks are also shortlisted. In all, about 1,920 candidates reach the main examination, though the notice does not say whether the counts apply per post or per category.

Staff working on contract, ad hoc or temporary basis in the University and its colleges as on 25 March 2021 get one extra mark per year of service, up to 10, in the preliminary test and again in the final merit. On a 200-mark main paper that is up to 5 per cent, which matters when merit lists are compressed.

Exam pattern

Stage Details Marks Time
Preliminary test (MCQ, shortlisting only) 100 questions, 2 marks each 200 2 hr 30 min
Main examination (descriptive) Educational administration, rules and their application 200 2 hours
Skill test (qualifying) Computer, office procedure, noting and drafting, typing 100 (50 to qualify) As decided

The preliminary paper has 20 questions each on General Knowledge (or General Studies), Reasoning and General Mathematical Ability, and 40 on Administration of Higher Educational Institutions. That last section alone is 40 per cent of the paper. Questions are bilingual in English and Hindi, and you must use one language throughout. Candidates with visual impairment, cerebral palsy or similar PwBD conditions get 20 extra minutes per hour.

A wrong answer costs 0.5 mark, one-quarter of the question’s two marks. If each question has four options, which the notice does not state, a blind guess is worth 0.25 × 2 − 0.75 × 0.5, or about +0.125 marks. Eliminating one option raises it to about +0.33. Guessing after elimination pays, and attempting everything blind is mildly positive, but a section you know well is a better use of time.

Syllabus

The General Knowledge or General Studies section covers general science, current events of national and international importance, Indian history and the national movement, the Constitution, polity, economy and geography. Reasoning covers analytical ability, decision-making and data interpretation. Mathematical ability covers calculation, statistics and commercial mathematics at secondary and higher secondary level.

The 40-mark Administration section covers rules and policies for higher education institutions in India, their nodal agencies and their financial and administrative functioning, plus the Act, Statutes and Ordinances of the University of Delhi. This is where candidates from outside the University system lose marks, since the material is specific and not in standard general studies books. It is worth starting with the DU Act and Statutes, and with the regulatory bodies in higher education.

The main paper tests educational administration and management, including the regulators and recent developments, budget formulation and execution, and the use of ICT in a university. It also tests the functional use of rules: Fundamental Rules, Supplementary Rules, General Financial Rules, procurement through GeM, pension and grievance handling. The skill test covers office procedure manuals, noting and drafting and IT, and for Senior Assistant it adds management of administrative units. Assistant candidates are also tested at 35 wpm in English or 30 wpm in Hindi.

Cut-off

The advertisement fixes the preliminary cut-off by formula. It is 50 per cent of the average score of the top 5 per cent of candidates who appeared. If that group is smaller than two candidates, the top two are averaged. SC and ST candidates get a 5 per cent relaxation in the cut-off marks, and PwBD candidates 10 per cent.

Here is how it behaves, using made-up numbers for illustration only. If 20,000 candidates sit the test, the top 5 per cent is 1,000 people. If those 1,000 average 130 out of 200, the cut-off is 65. A harder paper pulls the average down and the cut-off with it, so there is no fixed number to chase.

The formula also sits next to the 30-plus-15 shortlisting rule, and the notice does not say which controls. With at most about 1,920 places, the shortlisting count may bind long before the 50 per cent line does, and in that case your rank decides, not the cut-off. That reading is unconfirmed.

I found no verified cut-off from the 2024 DU process, so none is quoted, and no 2026 cut-off exists until the preliminary test is held.

Salary and job profile

Senior Assistant is Pay Level 6 and Assistant is Pay Level 4 of the 7th Pay Commission. The advertisement does not state the pay figures or the allowances, saying only that the posts carry the admissible scale plus admissible allowances. On the 7th CPC pay matrix, Level 4 runs from Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 81,100 and Level 6 from Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400. That is from the standard matrix and not from the notice, and the take-home figure depends on allowances at posting.

The advertisement lists no duties. The syllabus, which centres on office procedure, noting, drafting, budgets and rules, points to administrative and accounts-related work in university departments and offices. No TA or DA is paid for attending the test.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying with experience that is ambiguous. An unclear certificate is the most likely cause of rejection at scrutiny.
  • Paying the fee before checking the 2024 exemption.
  • Using a shared or rarely checked email address.
  • Applying as General to keep options open, which forfeits age relaxation and cut-off relaxation.
  • Taking an OBC certificate issued before 1 April 2026 or without a Central List sub-caste.
  • Missing the skill test, since merit is drawn only for those who appear in both stages.

FAQs

Is it 126 posts or 98?
The advertisement’s vacancy table shows 46 Senior Assistant and 80 Assistant posts, which is 126. A portal listing of 98 posts does not match it.

I applied under R&P/311/2024. Do I pay the fee again?
The advertisement exempts those applicants. It does not describe how the portal will recognise them, so keep your 2024 details and write to the technical contact email before paying.

Do my preliminary test marks count in the final merit?
No. The preliminary test only shortlists. Final merit comes from the main examination, with the skill test as a qualifying stage you must attend.

I have two years in a private company. Can I apply for Assistant?
Only if the company has an annual turnover of at least Rs. 200 crore, or your pay package is equivalent to the Junior Assistant level, and your certificate shows it. The experience must be complete by the closing date.

Is there a minimum score in the skill test?
Yes. You need 50 of 100 marks to qualify. The marks do not add to your merit.
